Stevens Pass closes for reasons that are mostly about what is above the road, not on it. The highway crosses the runouts of major avalanche paths, and WSDOT closes the road to run control work after storms load those paths. The second cause is geometry: two lane grades with nowhere for a jackknifed truck to go turn a single spin out into a full closure while crews clear it. The third is arithmetic: in the heaviest Cascade storms, snow falls faster than even a strong plow rotation can remove it, and the pass takes a pause. None of these are mysteries, and all three are visible forming on the corridor cameras before they become alerts here, which is the practical reason to read the cameras and the alerts together.
Is US 2 closed anywhere right now?
The alert list on this page is the live WSDOT feed for the whole Everett to Wenatchee corridor, closures first. The pass status at the top covers the Stevens Pass summit segment specifically.
Why is Stevens Pass closed?
The usual reasons, in order: avalanche control work on the slide paths above the highway, a collision or spin out blocking lanes on a grade, and storm conditions that outrun the plows. The alert card for the closure states the cause WSDOT reports.
What is the detour when Stevens Pass closes?
There is no short detour. The alternate crossing is Snoqualmie Pass on I-90, then US 97 north over Blewett Pass to US 2 at Cashmere, or the reverse. The Stevens vs Snoqualmie page keeps both live verdicts side by side for that decision.
