Baring is a small unincorporated community along the South Fork of the Skykomish, named for a town in England and built on logging and the railroad. A general store, a tavern, and a scattering of cabins along the river make up the place, and Baring Mountain stands over it all. For Stevens Pass drivers, Baring marks the middle of the canyon run, far enough up that the lowland weather is a rumor and close enough to the top that the summit forecast starts to matter more than the valley one.
The road through Baring runs close under the canyon walls, and this is avalanche and rockfall country in the broad sense: WSDOT crews watch the slopes here in every storm cycle. Money Creek, just east of Baring, is where the highway and the railroad squeeze together at the edge of the river. Drivers should expect wet, shaded pavement and the odd deer at dusk. If a closure stacks traffic at the summit, the tail of the queue sometimes reaches back this far.
