Coles Corner is the junction where SR 207 leaves US 2 for Lake Wenatchee and Plain, named for a settler who ran a store and hotel at this crossroads in the stagecoach era. There is a well known diner in a converted gas station, fuel, and not much else, which is exactly what makes it important: on the east side of Stevens Pass this is the first real stop after the summit, twenty miles down the grade, and the turnoff for a whole valley of cabins and summer homes.
Eastbound drivers reach Coles Corner still coming down from 4,061 feet, and in winter the snow line often sits right around this elevation: bare pavement above can turn to slush here, or the reverse. The Lake Wenatchee turn brings recreation traffic across the highway in every season, and the junction backs up on Sunday afternoons when the lake empties toward the pass. Westbound, Coles Corner is your last fuel and last easy turnaround before committing to the climb, so it earns a status check.
