Everett is where the Stevens Pass drive begins. US 2 leaves Interstate 5 at the Hewitt Avenue trestle and crosses the Snohomish River flats before climbing out of the city, and for most drivers this is the last full set of services before the mountains: fuel, groceries, tire shops, and chain sales all cluster near the I-5 interchange. Boeing's wide body plant and Naval Station Everett make this a working city first, and the Friday evening line of ski traffic at the trestle is a local institution.
The trestle and the river crossing are the bottleneck. When the pass is busy or a stall blocks a lane, the backup forms here first, well before any snow does. Drivers heading over Stevens Pass on a storm day should fuel in Everett and make the chains decision here too, because the next easy stop with real inventory is Monroe. The low elevation means Everett weather tells you almost nothing about the summit: it can be 45 and raining at the trestle while the pass is in a full chain restriction.
The full Stevens Pass conditions page carries the summit story: avalanche zones, the two climbs, and the storm playbook.
