Gold Bar is the gateway town of the upper Skykomish Valley, named for a gravel bar in the river where prospectors once panned color. Wallace Falls State Park, one of the most visited waterfall hikes in the state, sits just north of town, and the highway through Gold Bar carries everything: skiers, hikers, rafters, and the people who live up the valley and commute down it. The big grocery and the espresso stands here do a land office business on powder mornings.
Gold Bar is the last town of any size before the road commits to the mountains, and it is the last reliable fuel and food until Leavenworth on the far side of the pass. When chain restrictions go up, the word reaches Gold Bar fast, and the parking lots fill with drivers fitting chains in the valley rain before the climb. East of town the valley narrows to a canyon in places, the river drops away below the road, and the drive becomes the mountain drive everyone pictures when they say Stevens Pass.
