Monroe is the last full service town on the west side of Stevens Pass and the natural staging point for the drive. It sits where US 2 meets SR 522 from Seattle and SR 203 down the Snoqualmie Valley, so traffic from three directions funnels through here before the foothills. The Evergreen State Fairgrounds anchor the west end of town, and every grocery, hardware store, and tire shop in Monroe knows what a chain restriction weekend looks like.
Smart pass drivers treat Monroe as the decision point: check the live Stevens Pass status here, buy chains here if the rack at home is empty, and expect the drive to change character within fifteen minutes of leaving town. East of Monroe the valley narrows, the river closes in, and services thin out to Sultan and Gold Bar. In winter, WSDOT and the State Patrol both stage out of the Monroe area when a storm is working the pass, and the reader boards here give the first official word of a restriction.
The full Stevens Pass conditions page carries the summit story: avalanche zones, the two climbs, and the storm playbook.
Every camera on the highway is on the US 2 cameras page, in milepost order from Everett to Wenatchee.
