Skykomish is the last town on the west side of Stevens Pass, a historic Great Northern railroad town that exists because of the pass: this is where helper engines once coupled on for the climb and where the Cascade Tunnel route begins. The railroad still runs the town's rhythm, the Skykomish River bends around it, and at just over 900 feet it is the final fuel, food, and lodging stop before the summit, fifteen miles up the grade.
Everything about the pass drive sharpens in Skykomish. The chain up areas and the WSDOT presence here mean this is where restrictions stop being a sign and start being a trooper waving you over. When the pass closes, Skykomish is where west side traffic waits it out, and the town has fed and sheltered stranded drivers for a hundred winters. If the status at the top of this site says chains required, Skykomish is your last comfortable place to put them on. The grade from here to the summit gains over 3,000 feet and does not let up.
The full Stevens Pass conditions page carries the summit story: avalanche zones, the two climbs, and the storm playbook.
