Sultan is a small mill town on the Sultan River where US 2 runs straight through the middle of main street, traffic lights and all. It is the kind of place the Stevens Pass drive slows down for, literally: the lights at Sultan meter the eastbound flow on busy mornings, which locals will tell you is a blessing for everyone trying to merge from a side street. A good bakery and a couple of honest diners make it a better stop than its size suggests.
Through town, watch for turning traffic and pedestrians; the highway is the main street. East of Sultan the road begins its real climb in earnest, the Skykomish River takes over as the constant companion on the right, and the shoulders narrow. Sultan Basin Road heads north from here into the hills, a reminder that this is logging and recreation country, and logging trucks joining the highway are part of the drive in every season.
