Wenatchee is the east end of the US 2 corridor, the apple capital city at the confluence of the Wenatchee and Columbia rivers, and the commercial center for all of north central Washington. US 2 crosses the Columbia here into East Wenatchee and continues across the state, but for Stevens Pass purposes this is the terminus: the biggest town on the drive, with every service, the hospital, the tire shops, and the valley's main airport across the river.
The approach into Wenatchee descends through Monitor and along the river, and the city's bridges carry the combined flow of US 2 and US 97. Winter in Wenatchee is a valley winter of fog and inversions, often colder at the river than partway up the pass, which surprises drivers who assume elevation is the whole story. Westbound, Wenatchee is the mirror of Everett: fuel up, check the live status at the top of this site, and settle the chains question before Tumwater Canyon, because the next easy stop is on the far side of the summit.
