The Seattle to Leavenworth drive is the Stevens Pass trip for most of Washington: north on I-5 to Everett, then east on US 2 over the Cascades at 4,061 feet and down the Wenatchee River into the Bavarian village. It is the region's great Friday escape and its great Sunday return, and winter writes the schedule: the same drive that takes two easy hours in July can take four in a chain restriction with a full ski area letting out. The pass status at the top of this site is the number that decides when you leave.
Seattle to Everett on I-5, about 28 miles of freeway that runs fine except at rush hour, when it does not run at all.
Everett to Skykomish on US 2, about 50 miles of river valley two lane through Monroe, Sultan, Gold Bar, and Index, beautiful and bottleneck prone.
Skykomish to the Stevens Pass summit, 15 miles of steady climbing to 4,061 feet, where the weather and the restrictions live.
Summit to Leavenworth, about 35 miles down the east slope through Coles Corner and Tumwater Canyon into town.
There is no real alternative when Stevens Pass closes: the detour is Snoqualmie Pass on I-90 and back up US 97 over Blewett Pass, adding hours. In summer, the valley segment is the constraint instead, and leaving Seattle before the Everett platoon forms is worth more than any shortcut.
